Delayed baggage
If your bag does not arrive
Airlines handle millions of bags every year with a high level of efficiency, but a bag can still be delayed by security checks, weight restrictions on the flight or other factors outside the airline’s control.
- Report it before you leave the baggage claim area. Every airline assigns a representative to meet each flight and handle baggage issues.
- Some airlines will not open a delayed-baggage report once you have left the claim area, or will open it only as a courtesy, in which case you may have to collect the bag at the airport yourself.
- If you report it on time, the airline usually delivers the bag to your address at no cost.
- If you cannot find anyone in the claim area, call the airline for instructions.
Essential purchases
If you do not live in Monterrey, the airline may authorize an amount for essential items while you wait for your bag. The amount depends on the airline, your itinerary and how long you are without your baggage. Keep your receipts and ask an airline representative how to claim the refund.
If the bag is not found
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| First 3 to 5 days | The airline’s baggage office at the airport searches for your bag. |
| Next 2 to 4 weeks | The case moves to the airline’s central baggage office. |
| Bag not found | You can claim compensation: under international agreements signed by Mexico for international itineraries, or under Mexican civil aviation law for domestic flights. |
